Brettchenweben - Technikdetails

 

Es gibt verschiedene Wege ein Missed Hole zu weben. Einfacher, oder komplex, wie es bei isländischen Borten gemacht wurde. Ich habe vor vielen, vielen Jahren (2007) bei Marijke van Epen die Grundlagen zum isländischen Missed Hole gelernt.

Leider habe ich viel davon vergessen. Aber da ich jetzt das Hofdi-Band mit einem 'normalen' Missed Hole webe, habe ich einen verregneten Samstag genutzt und alles zum Thema 'Missed Hole' herausgesucht, um zu verstehen, warum meine Weben doch anders ist, als das Original.

So schön das Ergebniss damals beim Kursus auch war, es hat mich jahrelang für die viel einfacherer Missed Hole Technik ruiniert. Denn die Technik ist wesentlich komplexer, als das Weben nach Skizze, ich brauche komplexe Musteranleitungen, weil die Nupsis ganz anders gewebt werden. Und das Weben hatte mir keine Freude gemacht. Allerding hat es wesentlich mehr Struktur, als die einfacherer Methode.

Ich hatte die Schwanenborte, die ich damals im Kursus gewebt hatte, vor einigen Jahren noch einmal in der gängigen, einfacheren Technik gewebt. Perfekt für einen Vergleich.

Vergleichen wir zuerst einmal die Anleitungen:

There are different ways to weave a Missed Hole. Simpler, or complex, as it was done with Icelandic bands. I learned the basics of the Icelandic Missed Hole many, many years ago (2007) from Marijke van Epen.

Unfortunately, I have forgotten a lot of it. But since I am now weaving the Hofdi band with a normal Missed Hole, I took advantage of a rainy Saturday to look up everything about the 'Missed Hole' to understand why my weaving is different from the original.

As beautiful as the result was at the time of the course, it ruined me for years for the much simpler Missed Hole technique. Because the technique is much more complex than weaving from a sketch, I need complex pattern instructions because the nupsis (you can also call it pebbles as it looks similar to the Andean pebble weave) are woven quite differently. And I didn't enjoy the weaving. However, it has much more structure than the simpler method.

I had woven the swan border I had woven in the course back then again a few years ago in the common, simpler technique. Perfect for a comparison..

Let's first compare the instructions:

Auf der linken Seite die Anleitung fürs isländische Missed Hole. Jedes Karo steht für ein Brettchen und eine Drehung. Besonders im Bereich vom Bauch des Schwanes ist es kompliziert, weil hier die Brettchen immer wieder eins vorwärts und eins rückwärts gewebt werden.

Auf der rechten Seite die Anleitung für das moderne Missed Hole. Jedes Karo steht für 2 Brettchen und zwei Drehungen. Man webt mit den Augen, weil man sehen kann wie die Musterfarbe gewebt wird.

On the left the instructions for the Icelandic Missed Hole. Each square represents a tablet and a turn. It is especially complicated in the area of the swan's belly, because here the tablets are repeatedly woven one forwards and one backwards.

On the right side the instructions for the modern Missed Hole. Each diamond represents 2 tablets and two turns. You weave with your eyes because you can see how the pattern colour is woven.

 

Und so sieht es gewebt aus:

Auch wenn hier für beide Motive mit 30 Brettchen gearbeitet wurde, kann es durchaus sein,  dass andere Motive in unterschiedlichen Brettchenzahlen gearbeitet werden.

And this is how it looks woven:

Even though 30 tablets were used for both motifs, it is possible that other motifs are worked with different numbers of tablets.

Ich webe die Hofdi-Motiv in der modernen Missed Hole Version und komme mit 46 Brettchen aus. Dabei sind sie tatsächlich mit insgesamt 54 Brettchen gewebt worden.

Und wenn man im Hofdi Band unter die Broschierung schaut (ja, es gibt einige Felder, wo die Broschierung so abgenutzt ist, dass das geht), sieht man, dass dort der Abstand zwischen den Musterfäden wesentlich geringer ist, als der Bereich, wo gar keine Broschierung vorgesehen war. Und das macht dann die 8 Brettchen mehr aus.
Leider habe ich keine Bildrechte, um einen entsprechenden Ausschnitt vom Fund zeigen zu können.

Just as I weave the Hofdi motif in the modern Missed Hole version and get by with 46 tablets. Yet it was actually woven with a total of 54 tablets.  

And if you look under the brocade in the Hofdi band (yes, there are some areas where the brocade is so worn that this is possible), you can see that there is much less space between the pattern threads than the area where no brocade was intended at all. And that makes up for the 8 tablets more. Unfortunately, I do not have the necessary copyright to be able to show an appropriate detail of the find.

Aber ich glaube, diese Anleitungsskizze zeigt den Unterschied ganz gut auf. Und in dem Moment, wo das 'Missed Hole' beim Drehen oben ist, kommt es eben nicht zu einer Flottierung, sonderen es entsteht eine Gewebebindung durch den 2. Faden, der abwechselnd nach unten und oben gedreht wird.

But I think this instruction sketch shows the difference quite well. And at the moment when the 'missed hole' is at the top during turning, there is no floatation, but a binding of the fabric is created by the second thread, which is turned alternately downwards and upwards.

Das sind gar nicht so große Unterschiede, aber wie oben schon gezeigt, wirkt es ganz anders, wenn man den Hintergrund webt. Und das geht so:
