Ein Siegelband aus dem Jahre 1294

Mein Schautisch hat ein neues Highlight: eine Urkunde mit einem brettchengewebten Siegelband und einem Siegel in Originalgröße – das eigentliche Siegelmotiv fehlt allerdings noch.

Es handelt sich um die Rekonstruktion einer Urkunde, die am 1. August 1294 von König Johann Balliol von Schottland ausgestellt wurde.

Das Siegelband hatte ich bereits vor vielen Jahren gewebt, doch ich wusste lange nicht, wie die zugehörige Urkunde ausgesehen hatte. Immer wieder suchte ich danach – ohne Erfolg. Erst vor einigen Wochen stieß ich auf den Text der Urkunde.

Als ich Carsten Giesen fragte, ob er den Text schreiben könnte, fand er eine vergleichbare Urkunde, die aus dem folgenden Jahr stammt. Dadurch kennen wir auch die Größe des ursprünglichen Siegels. Diese Urkunde diente uns als Vorlage für die Gestaltung des Originaltextes.

Die Rekonstruktion entstand als Hauruckaktion für die Archäotechnica und wird noch weiter überarbeitet. Trotzdem freue ich mich sehr, dieses ungewöhnliche Stück nun präsentieren zu können.

My display table has a new highlight: a reconstructed charter with a tablet-woven seal-tag and a seal in its original size – although the actual seal design is still missing.

It is a reconstruction of a charter originally issued by King John Balliol of Scotland of Scotland on 1 August 1294.

I had woven the seal-tag many years ago, but for a long time I had no idea what the original charter looked like. I searched for it repeatedly, but without success. Only a few weeks ago did I finally come across the text of the charter.

When I asked Carsten Giesen whether he could write the charter, he found a comparable charter from the following year. This also revealed the original size of the seal. That charter served as the model for the layout of our reconstruction of the original text.

The reconstruction was something of a rush job for the Archäotechnica and will be refined further, but I am nevertheless delighted to be able to present such an unusual piece.
