2020 hatte ich in Zusammenarbeit mit Marled Mader den Thorsberger Prachtmantel nachgearbeitet. Und diesen präsentiere ich seit einiger Zeit auf einer Schneiderpuppe, wenn ich zeitenübergreifende Displays vorstelle.
Aber nur den Mantel zur präsentieren ist ja irgendwie doof. Und deswegen trägt die Puppe (ich nenne sie Bobby) auch eine Tunika. Diese Tunika war bisher ohne Borte. Da es aus Thorsberg den Fund einer Tunika mit einer brettchengewebten Borte gibt, ist es doch schön, wenn man es als passendes Ensemble präsentiert kann.
In 2020, I recreated the Thorsberg magnificent coat in collaboration with Marled Mader. And for some time now, I have been presenting it on a tailor's dummy when I present cross-era displays.
But just presenting the coat is kind of stupid. And that's why the dummy (I call her Bobby) is wearing a tunic. This tunic previously had no border. Since a tunic with a tablet-woven border was found in Thorsberg, it's nice to be able to present it as a matching ensemble.
Das Problem ist nur, dass die Borte zwar vollständig erhalten ist, aber die Bilder sind nicht wirklich hilfreich, weil nur braune Strukturen mit einigen wenigen farblichen Akzenten zu erkennen sind. Es gibt auch einiges an Literatur zu dem Thema, aber nichts, was bei der Rekonstruktion weiter helfen könnte.
Vor einigen Jahren habe ich eine Rekonstruktion versucht, als Zweilochbrte (also Musterteil mit zwei Fäden pro Brettchen), wo ich ein einfarbiges Strukturmuster gewebt hatte. Das war bestenfalls eine Annäherung, aber mehr war nicht drin. Später habe ich das Strukturmuster noch ein wenig angepasst, aber auch das würde ich nur als Rekonstruktionsversuch bezeichnen und nicht als gute und passende Rekonstruktion.
The only problem is that although the border is completely preserved, the pictures are not really helpful because only brown structures with a few colored accents can be seen. There is also a lot of literature on the subject, but nothing that could help with the reconstruction.
A few years ago I tried to reconstruct it as a two-hole board (i.e. pattern piece with two threads per tablet), where I had woven a single-coloured structural pattern. It was an approximation at best, but that was all I could do. Later I adjusted the structural pattern a little, but I would also describe that as an attempt at reconstruction and not as a good and appropriate reconstruction.
2023 hatte Sylvie M. Odstrcilova einen weiteren Rekonstruktionsversuch in der ATR veröffentlicht. Ich fand ihre Idee des Auszählens der Richtungswechsel und dazu ein Muster zu rekonstruieren sehr spannend und habe ihr Motiv jetzt nachgewebt. Und um vergleichen zu können, habe ich an den einen Ärmel ihren Entwurf und an den anderen Ärmel mein Entwurf genäht.
In 2023, Sylvie M. Odstrcilova published another reconstruction attempt in the ATR. I found her idea of counting the changes of direction and reconstructing a pattern very exciting and have now rewoven her motif. And to be able to compare, I sewed her design on one sleeve and my design on the other sleeve.
Das hatte ich auch beim Textilwochenende am Glauberg entsprechend gezeigt und bei fachkundigem Publikum zur Diskussion gestellt. Die meisten sagten ‚Beide Versionen kann man aus dem Fund ableiten, aber ob eine besser, stimmiger ist, kann anhand der Vorlage nicht erkannt werden‘. Eine Aussage war ‚bei deiner Version wirkt die Struktur deines Entwurfs stimmiger, aber mehr kann ich auch nicht erkennen‘.
Aber in dem Moment, wo man das Bild von der Borte in Schwarz/weiß wandelt und den Gelbton runter dreht, sieht es plötzlich ganz anders aus. Da sieht man, was Sylvie gemacht hat:
I had also shown this at the textile weekend at Glauberg and put it up for discussion with an expert audience. Most people said, 'Both versions can be derived from the find, but whether one is better or more consistent cannot be determined from the template.' One comment was, 'In your version, the structure of your design seems more consistent, but I cannot see any more than that.'
But the moment you change the picture of the border to black and white and turn down the yellow tone, it suddenly looks completely different. Then you can see what Sylvie did:
Ich finde es sehr spannend, dass diese zwei optisch sehr unterschiedlichen Versionen als akzeptable Rekonstuktionsversuche angesehen werden. Und ich bin sehr gespannt, ob man irgendwann herausfinden wird, was jetzt wirklich stimmt. Oder ob die Lösung noch ganz anders ist.

P.S. Die Tunika selbst ist keine Rekonstruktion. Da man nur die Ärmel sieht, habe ich ein aussortiertes Oberteil verwendet.
I find it very exciting that these two visually very different versions are seen as acceptable attempts at reconstruction. And I am very curious to see whether they will ever find out what is really correct or whether the solution is completely different.

PS The tunic itself is not a reconstruction. Since you can only see the sleeves, I used a discarded tunic.
