Kalkulation zur Rekonstruktion einer brettchengewebten Borte

Beispiel: Das flottierte Band aus den Textilfunden, St.Severin, Köln.

Herauszufinden, dass es das Band gibt, wenn man bei Freunden in Büchern blättert (Sabine Schrenk, "Fundort Schrein - Der Textilfund aus St. Severin in Köln", Textilien in der Archäologie, Materialien zur Bodendenkmalpflege im Rheinland 22, 2011), war einfach unbezahlbar.
Das Buch zu besorgen kostete mich 21,00 Euro + Porto und 1,5 Wochen Wartezeit, bis es geliefert wurde.
Anhand des Bildes machte ich einen ersten Musterentwurf. Das dauerte 2 Stunden, dabei stelle ich fest, dass trotz Einscannen die Bildqualität nicht gut genug ist, um die Fäden zu zählen, damit man die genaue Brettchenanzahl bestimmen kann.

Herauszufinden woher ich bessere Bilder bekommen kann, dauerte weitere 1,5 Stunden. Danach bestellte ich das Buch 'Der hl. Severin von Köln Verehrung und Legende Befunde und Forschungen zur Schreinsöffnung' von 1999 herausgegeben von Joachim Oepen, Bernd Päffgen, Sabine Schrenk und Ursula Tegtmeier. Es kostet 49,00 Euro und es dauert 2 Wochen, bis es da war.

Endlich habe ich das buch in der Hand und würde nichts lieber machen, als das Muster auszuarbeiten. Aber der Alltag war im Weg. Ich habe einen Beruf, einen Ehemann, der nicht ständig auf mich verzichten möchte und einen Haushalt, der ab und zu gemacht werden muss... Ihr wisst, wovon ich rede... 

Aber dann hatte ich Glück und bekam von einer Freundin, die sich die Borte bei einer Führung ansehen konnte, ein wirklich gutes, hochauflösendes Bild, mit dem ich arbeiten konnte.

Wieder eine Woche später war es an einem Samstagmorgen soweit. Der Göttergatte kannte das schon und machte einen großen Bogen um das Arbeitszimmer.

Fünf Stunden später war es geschafft, ich hatte ein Flimmern vor den Augen, aber die Anleitung für das erste Mustersegment war erstellt. Das passende Material lag schon bereit (Seide, Wert ca. 15,00 Euro) und eine Stunde später war die Kette aufgezogen.
Eine weitere Stunde später wusste ich, dass ich falsch gedacht und deswegen die Kette falsch aufgezogen hatte, so dass ich eigentlich noch einmal von vorne anfangen müsste. Aber mein Rot war alle – so eine verd…. Ihr wisst schon.

Der herzallerliebste Gatte tröstete mich mit einem sehr leckeren Abendessen. Und danach ging ich nicht mehr an den Webstuhl, sondern ertränkte meinen Frust in Alkohol.
In der Nacht entschied ich mich, die Borte so weiter zu weben – damit war es nur ein dreifarbiges Band statt eines vierfarbigen Bandes. Ich musste sowieso noch das Muster verbessern, da einige Details nicht mit dem Original übereinstimmten.
Am nächsten Morgen ging es wieder an den Webstuhl und ich webte das erste Mustersegment fertig. Dabei stellte ich fest, dass einige Details nicht mit dem Original übereinstimmten und ich überarbeitete die Anleitung erneut. Insgesamt benötigte ich drei Versuche, bis das Segment stimmte.

Da das Original insgesamt 8 Segmente und insgesamt 1 Zwischenmuster hat, benötigte ich für die Mustererstellung des Restes und ständiger Korrekturen noch einmal ca. 40 Stunden.

Das macht insgesamt
50 Stunden Mustererstellung
60 Stunden weben
85,00 Euro Materialkosten.
Das Leiden meines Mannes, weil ich tagelang (ok ich habe insgesamt 6 Monate incl. Recherche damit zugebracht, doch nur an einigen Tagen war es 'schlimm') nicht ansprechbar war, kann man nicht mit Schmerzensgeld aufwiegen.

Dabei weiß ich, dass die Rekonstruktion immer noch nicht richtig ist, eben weil ich den Fehler beim Aufzug gemacht habe und aus diesem Grund das Zwischenmuster nicht stimmt. Ob das Muster beim richtigen Aufzug stimmt, muss ich noch ausprobieren.

Wie kann man das kalkulieren?

Wenn ich das Ganze als Hobby sehe und 15,00 Euro die Stunde als Aufwandsentschädigung rechne, dann kommt man auf 1.650,00 Euro ‚Lohnkosten’.
Würde ich das professionell machen, müsste ich in Deutschland einen Grundlohn von mindestens 35,00 Euro pro Stunde berechnen (optimal 77,00 Euro), um nach Abzug von Steuern, Krankenversicherung, Rentenversicherung, etc. noch halbwegs über die Runden zu kommen. Wenn ich das als Gewerbe  machenund darüber eine Rechnung erstellen würde, müsste ich natürlich noch 19% Mwst. berechnen.

Und ganz ehrlich, es macht mir Spaß, eine Handarbeit im Wert von mehreren tausend Euro (die natürlich niemand dafür zahlen wird) einfach so als Tischdeko zu verwenden.

Was ich als anstrengend empfinde sind Anfragen nach dem Muster. Nein, ich habe sehr viel Arbeit reingesteckt und weder gebe ich es umsonst raus, noch kann man mir den Aufwand, den ich damit hatte, auch nur annähernd  bezahlen. Ich bin in der Hinsicht ein Künstler, der das Ergebnis gerne zeigt, aber den Weg dorthin für sich behält.
Ich entscheide auch bei anderen Borten gerne selbst, was ich für nichtkommerzielle Verwendung auf meiner Homepage veröffentliche und was nicht...

Ich bin auch schon gefragt worden, ob ich die Anleitungen in einem Buch veröffentlichen möchte.
Dann müsste ich die Anleitungen noch einmal umschreiben, dass sie jeder verstehen kann, mit Angabe der Drehrichtung, richtiger Aufzug, S&Z-Stellung, etc.
Letzteres kann ich nicht, ersteres und zweites würde alleine bei dieser Borte glatt noch einmal 20-30 Stunden kosten und dann müsste ich auch noch 'kontrollweben', ob das auch richtig ist.
Ein Buch lebt nicht von einer Anleitung alleine. Also müsste ich etwa 20-30 weitere 'neue' Muster erstellen.
Die Zeit kann mir einfach niemand bezahlen, es ist ein Hobby und soll keine Belastung für mich werden.

Und dass meine Anleitungen wohl nicht ganz so einfach sind, merke ich daran, dass die Anleitungen auf meiner Seite nicht oder nur mit Problemen nachgewebt werden...

Ich helfe aber gerne bei Musterentwicklung mit, dafür gibt es auf Facebook die Gruppe Advanced Tablet Weaving'.  ABER ich mag nicht für eine Person allein arbeiten, sprich PNs, Mails oder andere Anfragen sind außer bei noch nicht nachgewebten Bändern eine dumme Idee...

Finding out that there is a braid, by scrolling through the booksehlfes of your friends (I found: Sabine Schrenk, "locality Shrine - The textile Fund of St. Severin in Cologne," Textiles in archeology, materials for heritage management in the Rhineland 22, 2011), was simply priceless.
To purchase the book cost me 21,00 € + postage and 1.5 week waiting until it was delivered.
On the basis of the image I made a first pattern design. This took about 2 hours just to realize that quality of the scanned image is not good enough to count the threads so I couldn’t find out the exact number of tablets!

Research, where can I get better pictures from, took another 1.5 hours.
Order the book: St. Severin of Cologne worship and legend findings and research on Schreinsöffnung 1999 '. It cost 49.00 euros and I had 2 weeks waiting time until it was delivered.
Finally you have the book in hands and would love nothing more but to jump on it and work out the pattern. But daily life is there too, you have to work, have a husband to care for a household that needs some attention…. You know what I am talking about!

 

And inbetween I was so lucky to have a friend that offered me a high quality picture of the band, which she could take during a guided tour. Lucky me!
Another week later on a Saturday morning I finally was ready for the task ahead... The patient hubby knew what was on from many other former experiences and gave the office a wide berth.

Five hours later it was done, my eyes where flickering, but the instruction for the first pattern segment was done. The right material was on hand (silk, worth about € 15,00) and an hour later the chain was warped!
Another hour later, I knew I had some mistakes in my thinking and therefore warped the tablets wrong! Result:  In order to do it correct I shoud thread another band . But I ran out of red silk – da** .... You know some swearing words too! Just fill them in, they will fit!
 
The best husband of all comforted me with a marvelous dinner. And after that I ignored the loom and drowned my sorrows in alcohol.
At night I decided to use the warp as I'd done it! It would only be a three-color ribbon instead of a four colored one! I anyway had to make some improvements on the pattern, as some details did not match the original.
The next morning I wove the first pattern segment with the warp I had done the day before. And I found that some more details did not match the original and I revised the instructions again. Overall, I took three attempts before the segment looked, like it should be. 

 

As the original band has 8 segments and 1 intermediate pattern I needed for the sample preparation of the whole draft and permanent corrections again another 40 hours.

That makes a total of
50 hours pattern preparation
60 hours weaving
85,00 € material costs.
The suffering of my husband, (ok, I have spent a total of six months incl. research on it, but on some days it (I) was 'bad')  I was not really responsive and sometimes moody! You cannot calculate any compensation for his pain and suffering!

And I know that the reconstruction still is not perfectly right, just because I made the wrapping mistake and for this reason the intermediate pattern is not correct. Whether the pattern works with the right wrapping, I have to try.

How to calculate?

Seeing the whole thing as a hobby than I would wage 15.00 Euros as compensation the hour, then you get to 1.650,00 EUR, pure labor cost's for this one band.
As a  professional weaver, I would have in Germany a basic wage of at least 35,00 euro per hour charge (optimal 77,00 EUR) in order to pay taxes, health insurance, pensions, etc. and still survive (but by calculating 35,00 Euro only bareley as I don't have every week assignments that fill 40 hours working time). As a professional weaver I would have to work on invoices and of course I would have to add 19% VAT on top! 

And honestly, it's fun, a handmade worth several thousand Euros (which of course nobody is going to pay for it) simply to use as a table decoration. 

 

What I feel is nerve wrecking are requests for the pattern. I have invested a lot of work and spent many hours creating it and neither I give it away for nothing, nor can anyone come close to pay me and my efforts I have invested over the years to reach this ability. Just like an artist who likes to show the result, but keeps the drafts for himself!
I am the one to decide what to publish for non-commercial use on my website and what not ...

I have also been asked if I would like to publish the instructions in a book.
Then I would have to rewrite the instructions again that they can be understood by everyone, adding direction of rotation, proper wrapping, S & Z position, etc.
The latter I can not, and second: rewriting it alone for this braid would take another 20-30 hours. On top of rewriting you have to weave the pattern to see if the draft works or not.

A book does not live by one manual alone. So I had to create about 20-30 more 'new' pattern.
Time nobody can or will pay, it's a hobby and should be no burden for me.
I also realized: my instructions are probably not quite so simple to re-weave, at least not without difficulties as only few of the 'free' patterns on my page had been woven by other weavers.

But I'm happy to help in pattern development. On Facebook there is a group AdvancedTablet Weaving'. BUT I do not work for one person alone! So sending me pms, mail or other personal requests are a very stupid ideas! (Except for bands not woven or created so far)
